Rick del Monte, FAIA, DBIA, LEED AP
Currently, Rick holds the position of Lecturer at the Clemson University School of Architecture and the Clemson School of Construction Management. He served for 22 years as the National Design Director at Beck, the preeminent integrated architecture and construction firm in the United States. Prior to his tenure at Beck, Rick spent seven years as the Design Principal at Urban Architecture and nine years as an Associate Partner at KPF in New York City.
For the past 25 years, Rick has dedicated himself to the Design Build approach, recognizing its potential to enhance efficiency and elevate design quality within the construction industry. He has held various leadership positions at the Design Build Institute of America (DBIA), including Chairman of the Board, Chairman of the Design Excellence Council, and Chairman of the Student Engagement Committee. In the eight years since he joined the DBIA Board, the volume of Design Build work in the U.S. has more than doubled, now encompassing more than 47% of the total construction volume in the U.S. It is now the leading form of project delivery by a wide margin.
Rick has organized six conferences and presented over 20 times at national and international events, emphasizing the significance of Design Build and collaboration. Projects under his leadership have garnered numerous American Institute of Architects (AIA) Design Awards and 12 National Awards of Excellence from the DBIA.
As the Chief Design Officer for a 200-person architecture group and as a senior partner in a $1 billion construction company, Rick possesses a unique perspective on the building industry. He comprehends the business aspects of architecture and construction and the challenges that must be overcome to establish successful Design Build partnerships.
